Dr. Deepak Narayanan
B.Tech., M.Tech., PhD
Assistant Professor – ME

Dr. Deepak Narayanan is an accomplished researcher and educator with expertise in Thermal Engineering, specializing in the aerodynamic performance of compressor cascades in droplet- laden flow (wet compression). He holds a Ph.D. in Thermal Engineering and has contributed significantly to both academia and research. During his doctoral studies, he played a key role in establishing the Turbomachinery Lab at NITK
and was instrumental in the successful completion of a DST-SERB-funded project. His leadership extended beyond research, as he mentored Ph.D. scholars, trained M.Tech students, and guided summer interns. His commitment to education is further demonstrated through his active
involvement in undergraduate laboratory courses and his guidance of numerous outstanding student projects. Dr. Deepak Narayanan’s research contributions include novel work that laid the foundation for a new research area in his group, which continues to be explored by current scholars. His dedication to innovation and problem-solving is reflected in his publications and technical engagements. He has received the prestigious MHRD Fellowship for his Ph.D. and qualified for the GATE examination in 2012. Additionally, he has actively participated in academic workshops and conferences, including:
 Presented at the Asian Congress on Gas Turbines (ACGT 2016), organized by the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Bombay.
 Attended an MHRD-supported short-term course on “Inverse Heat Transfer”, organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NITK Surathkal.
 Participated in the course “Wind Tunnel Design and Testing from a Practical Perspective” (July 3-8, 2016).
 Volunteered and participated in the 42nd National Conference on Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power (December 14-16, 2015, NITK Surathkal).
 Attended a TEQIP-II sponsored one-day National Workshop on “Thermal Systems” (March 20, 2017).

 Participated in “ThermaComp2018” (July 9-11, 2018, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore).
 Attended a national workshop on “Biofluid Dynamics and Bioheat” (NITK Surathkal).
 Participated in a TEQIP-II Sponsored One-Day Workshop on “Hot Wire Anemometry: Fundamentals with Demonstration” (March 22, 2017, NITK Surathkal).
 Presented a paper at the 7th International and 45th National Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power Conference (FMFP-2018) (December 10-12, 2018, IIT Bombay).
 Attended a workshop on “Biofluid Dynamics” (February 21, 2017, NITK Surathkal).
 Attended the International Conference on Computational Methods for Thermal Problems (2018, Paper ID: 223309, pp. 246-250).
 Participated in The 7th Asian Joint Workshop on Thermophysics and Fluid Science (November 21-24, 2018). Research Projects Handled:
 Numerical study on the effect of incidence angles on the aerodynamic performance of a compressor cascade with upstream water injection, analyzing stalling characteristics, loss coefficient, and exit flow behavior compared to dry cases.
 Numerical study on the effect of droplet diameter and injection ratios on the aerodynamic performance of a compressor cascade.
 Numerical investigation on the combined effect of an active flow control method (suction slot) in a water injection environment on compressor blade performance.
 Experimental investigation on water rivulet formation and its propagation on compressor blades using flow visualization techniques.
 Design and development of a Multipurpose Agro Machine (MAM) for enhancing agricultural efficiency.
With a passion for teaching and research, Dr. Deepak Narayanan continues to inspire students and contribute to the advancement of Mechanical Engineering.
