Industrial Visit To 220 KV Substation, Kanjikode

An industrial visit was organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Ahalia School of Engineering and Technology, Palakkad, to the 220 KV Substation, Kanjikode 0n 15/10/2025. The visit aimed to provide practical exposure to students on the operation and components of high-voltage substations and their role in electrical power transmission. A total of 28 students participated in the visit, comprising 9 students from the second year and 19 students from the third year of the EEE branch. The team was accompanied and guided by Dr. Pradip C., Head of the Department, and Mr. Manickavasagam, Assistant Professor. During the visit, the engineers of the substation provided a detailed explanation of the various components and their functions. The students gained insights into the working of three 160 MVA transformers, the connections to and from the transformers, and the busbar arrangements. They were also familiarized with potential transformers, different types of insulators, and circuit breakers such as Vacuum Circuit Breakers (VCB) and SF₆ Circuit Breakers. The session also covered the protection systems employed in the substation to ensure safety andreliability during faults or abnormal conditions. Later, the students were taken to the conference hall,
where Mr. Rajesh, Executive Engineer, gave a detailed presentation on the power transmission layout of Palakkad and the substation’s single-line diagram. He also explained the operational procedures followed during sudden power failures, helping students understand the practical
aspects of substation management and fault handling. The visit proved to be highly informative and enriching, providing the students with valuable technical exposure and a better understanding of real-world power system operations.
