As part of the curriculum requirement to expose students to real-world industrial practices and to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ahalia School of Engineering and Technology, organised an industrial visit to Centroid Polymers. The visit was scheduled to begin at 11.00 a.m. and was attended by a total of 36 students from S3 and S7 Mechanical Engineering. The students were accompanied by Mr. Rahul, Faculty, Mechanical Engineering Department, and Mr. Kishore, Lab Instructor, Mechanical Engineering Department, who coordinated the visit and ensured the smooth conduct of the programme.
Objectives of the Visit
- To familiarize students with polymer processing techniques and equipment used in the industry.
- To provide practical exposure to the manufacturing processes involved in polymer product development.
- To understand the industrial applications of concepts learned in mechanical engineering coursework.
- To observe quality control, safety practices, and plant management followed in an industrial setup.
- To bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world industrial practices.
Proceedings of the Visit
The students assembled at the college premises and travelled together to Centroid Polymers, reaching the facility in time for the scheduled visit at 11.00 a.m. On arrival, the group was received by the representatives of the organisation, who briefed the students on the company’s operations, history, and the range of polymer products manufactured at the facility.
Following the introductory briefing, the students were taken on a guided tour of the shop floor, where they observed the various stages of polymer processing, including material handling, moulding, extrusion, and finishing operations. The plant personnel explained the working principles of the machinery used, the raw materials involved, and the process parameters that are monitored to maintain product quality. Students were also shown the quality testing and inspection procedures followed to ensure that finished products met the required standards.
Throughout the visit, students actively interacted with the technical staff of Centroid Polymers, raising queries related to machine operation, automation, safety protocols, and career opportunities in the polymer industry. Mr. Rahul and Mr. Kishore facilitated this interaction and ensured that students-maintained discipline and adhered to the safety guidelines prescribed by the host organisation throughout the visit.
Key Learning Outcomes
- Practical understanding of polymer processing methods such as moulding and extrusion.
- Exposure to industrial machinery, automation systems, and process control practices.
- Awareness of quality assurance and testing procedures followed in a manufacturing environment.
- Insight into workplace safety standards and best practices followed in the industry.
- Enhanced understanding of the practical relevance of mechanical engineering principles studied in the classroom.
Conclusion
The industrial visit to Centroid Polymers proved to be an enriching and informative experience for the students of S3 and S7 Mechanical Engineering. The visit successfully achieved its objective of providing students with practical exposure to industrial processes and reinforcing their theoretical understanding through real-world observation. The Department of Mechanical Engineering extends its sincere gratitude to the management and staff of Centroid Polymers for their hospitality and for providing the students with this valuable learning opportunity. Special thanks are also due to Mr. Rahul and Mr. Kishore for organising and accompanying the students on this visit.
