A one-day workshop titled Theory and Practice of Ham Radio Operations was held on 16 February 2019 in Ahalia Campus, Palakkad, Kerala, India. The program was jointly organized by Ahalia School of Engineering and Technology and IEEE-APS Kerala Chapter. The chief guest and speaker for the session was Mr. N. S. Harisankar (VU3NSH) a well-known ham radio operator and antenna designer with more than twenty years of experience. 69 students participated in the event. The event was inaugurated by Dr. P. R. Sreemahadevan Pillai (Dean Engineering, University of Calicut and Principal, Ahalia School of Engineering and Technology). The first half of the workshop introduced the participants to the technology behind ham radio and how it links wireless communication, antenna design and propagation concepts. The speaker also gave valuable information regarding the network of ham radio operators in the world, how to become a licensed ham radio operator and also highlighted the role of ham radio during disaster relief operations. The highly interactive second half of the workshop included demonstrations of various antennas that were used for ham radio operations. The workshop concluded with the valedictory session with felicitations by Dr. V. Balamurugan (Head of Department, Electronics and Communication Engineering) and Dr. Krishna Kumar Kishor (Coordinator and Associate Prof., ECE), and the Vote of Thanks by Mrs. Manju Mariya (Assistant Prof., ECE). The workshop was highly enlightening to the audience, and successful in exposing them to the world of antennas and applied electromagnetics.
